It was a cold morning. Two years have passed since that fatidic thursday in which we Spaniards woke up with the sad news of the killings of innocent civilians in Atocha/Téllez, El Pozo del Tío Raimundo and Santa Eugenia. It all happened 911 days after the September 11 (9/11) attacks. A Moroccan group tightly linked to Al-Qaeda planned to violently stop our daily lives. In spite of our politicians and social elites -who were more concerned in gaining political profits from the killings than in chasing those who commited them- we the common peoples were able to show the terrorists that they could not shake the foundations of our society. Despite all our imperfections and failures (which are not few), I firmly believe that Europe is the only place on Earth where Human Rights, Justice and Democracy have developed to a satisfactory level: definitevily not the best possible one, but far better than in any other part of the World.
The aftermath of that day were terrible: 192 deads and more than a thousand wounded, some of them still recovering. In fact, this was the worst terrorist act commited in Europe since World War II. Both to the families of the victims and to the wounded I can only show my respects and affection. We do not forget you.
